Here is the Offshore Energy We Want
The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is hearing loud and clear that the people and small businesses of South Carolina do not want oil exploration and drilling off the coast of our state.
But there is offshore energy we do want—Wind.
Next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday BOEM will hold public hearings to accept comments on developing wind energy off the South Carolina coast.
Workers’ Compensation Premiums Will Rise if this Bill Passes
Insurance companies are warning small businesses that their workers’ compensation premiums will increase if House Bill 4197 passes in the S.C. Legislature which starts January 12th. This bill would allow big businesses to opt out of our state workers’ compensation insurance system. That means that fewer workers will be in the insurance pool which makes the pool more risky to insurers.
Also, as big businesses reduce their costs by not paying injured workers the same benefits as required for all other companies, small businesses will find it harder to compete with these big businesses.
Finally, all taxpayers will end up paying the healthcare costs for the workers of the big businesses that opt-out of our state’s workers’ compensation system through higher Medicaid, Medicare or Social Security Disability claims.
Contact your representative in the S.C. House and ask that they oppose H.4197.
