Seismic Testing off our pristine coast: Who’s picking up the tab for legal fees?

(From Beaufort, SC, Mayor Billy Keyserling’s Newsletter)

16 SC Cities and Towns, of which Beaufort was the first to sign up, are in Federal District Court in Charleston opposing permits issued to allow seismic testing. The Cities and Towns are joined in the suit by hundreds of small businesses, led by the SC Small Business Chamber of Commerce . . . and Attorney General Allan Wilson has petitioned the Court to join us in this suit. A second suit was filed by environmental organizations throughout SC and across the nation. It is likely the two suits will be merged into one bringing the opponents under one tent.

And guess who is picking up the tab for legal fees which are mounting and are likely to continue as the case gets dragged out and big oil interests jump in to the fray?

NOT the TAXPAYERS!

The SOUTH CAROLINA ENVIRONMENTAL LAW PROJECT, “SCELP”, which just opened a satellite office in downtown Beaufort, has taken on the assignment and not charging us a dime.

That said, SCELP — which has Beaufort residents on its board of directors,(I am not one of them but have been a supporter for years) is raising the funds and I hope you will help me help them help US.
