Lawmakers this year addressed a number of other issues important to the business community. Here’s a look:
Bad check fees
The maximum fee that financial institutions can charge for writing a bad check under $100 was increased.
State law limited such charges to $25 for checks under $100 and $30 for bigger checks. A new law makes it $30 for any check.
The S.C. Small Business Chamber of Commerce was a lead group supporting the change. Because of high collection costs, small businesses usually lose money even when they collect the $30 fee, but the extra $5 will reduce their losses, said Frank Knapp Jr., the chamber’s executive director.
