Later today, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is expected to ask the Senate to begin consideration of critical measures to protect the right to vote. And the Republican minority is expected to block that consideration by resorting to the arcane filibuster rules.
Despite evidence that shows that voter fraud is relatively insignificant, while more than a third to half of all eligible voters don’t participate on a regular basis, the Brennan Center reports that nearly 30 new laws restricting access to voting were enacted in 17 different states in the first half of 2021 and more are pending. Imagine how well your business would fare if you were missing up to half your potential customers.
Urge the Senate to act to protect voting rights!
The American Sustainable Business Council knows our economy depends on our democracy and the principles of fairness, equity and universal access. That’s why we are again asking you to sign on to this letter demanding the Senate act on two important voting measures, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, aimed at restoring protections provided in the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and the Freedom to Vote Act, developed as a compromise measure after the more comprehensive For the People Act was passed in the House, but stalled in the Senate, again because of the filibuster.
Urge the Senate to act to protect voting rights
ASBC is renewing its call for the Senate to reform its filibuster rules to enable passage of these critical measures, which are essential to a functioning democracy, if the 60 votes necessary to overcome a filibuster cannot be secured.
Please join this important effort to demonstrate the strong business support for Senate action on these two measures, which are critical to assuring our elections remain free, fair and open to all our citizens. Today is the day!
