A new state law increases the amount businesses can charge for bad checks. The legislation, backed by the S.C. Small Business Chamber of Commerce, increases charges from $25.00 to $30 for returned checks written for under $100.00 The amount is now the same for checks over $100.00.
“This may sound like an insignificant mater,” said Tim Wilkes, chairman of the Small Business Chamber, “but I can assure you it means a great deal to the small businesses across the state which lose money everyday as a result of bad checks.”
And it will help consumers who don’t write bad checks too. “Every dollar that a business loses because of bad checks must be passed on to the consumer in some way. This small increase will help business lose less due to bad checks,” Wilkes said.
