Below is a letter from the IRS that I received. I like all other South Carolina taxpayers had their personal information stolen several years ago from our state Department of Revenue. As this letter indicates, someone used this information to try to view my tax returns sometime before May of last year.
While the IRS says that these criminals were not successful, what the letter doesn’t say is that someone did use my stolen personal information to obtain a quick tax refund last year before I filed my taxes. This resulted in my tax return needing to be submitted as a hard copy and delayed my expected refund.
My recommendation is that all South Carolinians should follow the suggestions made in this letter.
