State to decide on SCE&G’s 14% rate hike

The state Public Service Commission may vote next Tuesday on SCE&G’s request to hike small business electric rates by 14%.

“Even if S.C. Electric & Gas does not provide your electricity”, said Tim Wilkes, president of the S.C. Small Business Chamber of Commerce, “you should be concerned because other power companies are waiting to see if SCE&G is
successful.”

SCE&G officials have maintained that they need the rate increase to meet the cost of building new power generators.

Wilkes urged small business owners to contact their legislators and Public Service Commissioner and tell them that they oppose a 14% rate hike on small businesses as large  industries are targeted for only 5%.

“The SC Small Business Chamber of Commerce has sent letters to all legislators,” he said.

The chamber’s letter and information on the SCE&G request are on www.scsbc.org.
